Leeds traffic jams even worse than London - report

ROADS in Leeds and Bradford are still the most congested in Britain – worse even than London - with drivers spending 80 hours a year stuck in jams, a new report shows.

The latest research into traffic times by satellite navigation firm TomTom shows that drivers in the conurbation face a delay of 32 minutes for every hour driven during peak periods.

According to the study, which analysed congestion across Europe during the second quarter of 2012, traffic in Leeds increased journey times by an average of 27 per cent – and 52 per cent during the morning rush hour.

The most congested day in Leeds in the second quarter of this year was June 22, with the jams caused by rain storms.

According to TomTom, congestion rates in Leeds and Bradford have gone up by 10 per cent compared with the same quarter last year, the biggest increase of anywhere in Europe.

The firm’s quarterly congestion index, which involves the monitoring of millions of journeys a year to compare the percentage change between off-peak times and rush hours, shows that Istanbul is the most congested city in Europe.

Leeds ranks at 17th on the list of 60 European cities, with London the only other UK city to appear in the top 20.

Warsaw, Marseille and the Italian cities of Palermo and Rome appear in the top five.
