Leeds University drops out of world’s top 100

LEEDS University has fallen out of the top 100 worldwide in a new league table ranking institutions by reputation.

It follows Sheffield which dropped out of the 100 best a year earlier in The Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings.

The latest tables show Cambridge and Oxford are among the most prestigious universities in the world, but other UK institutions are losing ground.

A new global league table shows the two top universities remain part of an elite group of “super brands” and were placed third and fourth respectively, with Oxford moving up two spots from sixth last year.

The rankings measure the
power of university brands, based on the opinions of senior academics.

But researchers warned of a polarisation between the very top institutions in the UK and the rest, amid increasing competition from Asian nations.

The United States had more institutions into top 100 this year – 43 in total and with seven of the top 10 – with Harvard taking first place and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in second.

Australia has also moved
ahead, with six institutions in the top 100, compared with four last year.

The UK has now lost three universities from the top 100 in the past two years.

Overall, the UK had nine universities in the top 100, compared with 12 two years ago.
