Mexborough Grove and the surrounding area was a hive of police activity yesterday as investigations continued into the incident. A forensic tent was in place and a number of white-suited specialist officers were also on the scene.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Officers would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything in the time leading up to when the woman was found.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact North East Leeds CID via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

The police said they had been called to Mexborough Grove by the ambulance service, who were attending to the injured woman.

It was not clear yesterday how the paramedics had come to discover the woman.

Labour councillor Mohammed Rafique said he would be happy to speak to any residents who had been left alarmed by the events of the weekend.

He also said he hoped the incident would not be seen as a return to the troubled times of Chapeltown’s past.

“The area has really moved on in the last 10 or 15 years,” said Coun Rafique. “It’s definitely changed and is now a nice place to live and work.”

A 53-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Police yesterday said the man remained in custody.
