Lego loses brick trademarks battle

The Lego brick, one of the most instantly recognised toys in the world, cannot be trademarked, European judges have ruled.

The Danish toy-maker’s basic red plastic brick led to global toy industry success.

But rival Canadian maker Mega Brands, which markets Mega Bloks, has successfully appealed to the EU’s trademark office to cancel Lego’s trademark, claiming that the functional shape could not be trademarked by any one firm.
