Lengthy shortlist revealed for city’s tourism awards

More than 50 York businesses have been shortlisted for the 2012 Visit York Tourism Awards.

Among those selected are the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa and Hotel du Vin – both in the running for guest accommodation of the year – and The York Dungeon, which could scoop visitor attraction of the year. The awards will take place on Thursday, April 26 at the National Railway Museum.

Over the coming weeks, judges, including the Sheriff’s Lady Ann Deller, will review those shortlisted and winners from each category will then have the chance to go forward to the regional White Rose and national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

Visit York chairman John Yeomans said: “With the addition of new categories such as the Best Shopping Experience and also the people’s choice Taste of York Award, we are expecting this, our 15th Tourism Awards, to showcase some of the finest individuals and businesses in the city who are contributing to York’s standing as a world class tourism destination.

“Right now, it is vital for businesses to remain competitive and to strive for success which is why awards such as these are crucial for keeping a healthy marketplace in the city. “

Other businesses shortlisted include: Best shopping experience contenders the Balloon Tree Farm Shop & Café, the Hairy Fig delicatessen and chocolate shop Hotel Chocolat; and best pub/bar finalists the Black Swan (on Peasholme Green), the Golden Fleece (on Pavement) and the Old White Swan (on Goodramgate).

Finalists for the Taste of York Award will be revealed shortly and members of the public will be invited to vote online at www.visityork.org to decide the nation’s favourite place to eat in York.
