Lib Dems and Clegg threatened by Millbank militants

The Liberal Democrats' headquarters will be targeted with the same "legitimate force" seen at the riot at Millbank by student activists who will decide today whether to include Nick Clegg's Sheffield office and home in the action.

The Education Activist Network (EAN), one of the radical student groups involved in last Wednesday's protests which erupted into violent clashes with police, accused the Liberal Democrats of "betrayal" over university fees and refused to rule out violence when it attempts to occupy the party's headquarters on November 24.

A spokesman said student groups would try to take over the party's offices in Cowley Street, central London, as part of a "Day X" of widespread action against the Coalition government and members meeting today at the University of Sheffield will debate attempting occupations of Nick Clegg's home and constituency office.

The group is calling on students to walk out on November 24 and hold protest rallies.

Mark Bergfeld, a member of the NUS national executive committee, said the party was a legitimate target for direct action for telling "outright lies to students and to workers", and added: "If we fight, we can win. We are targeting the Lib Dems in particular for their lies. I think we have the right to target Lib Dems up and down the country, occupy their offices and call on them to join our fight. Ultimately, we want to split the Government."

It came as more than 20 lecturers yesterday (offered their support for the students who took part in last week's protests with a signed statement.

Members of the UCU and the National Executive Committee described the demonstration as "one of the most vibrant and exciting for a decade or more".
