Lib Dems drop to third place

THE LIBERAL Democrats were the big losers in Kirklees as they dropped to third place in the authority.

The party lost six seats and were overtaken by the Conservatives.

Labour remain the single biggest party as they picked up three seats to move to 27 councillors.

However, this is still some eight short of the amount they needed to secure an overall majority.

Labour has led the council as the biggest single minority party for the past year.

Kirklees Council has had no overall majority party since Labour lead it in 1998.

In the past seven years it has had leaders from Labour, Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

The Tories made two gains last night to move from 19 to 21 seats while the Lib Dems dropped from 20 councillors to 14.

The Conservative gains were made in the Colne Valley and Lindley wards.

As well as losing five seats to Labour and the Conservatives the Lib Dems also lost the Holme Valley North ward to independent candidate Edgar Holroyd-Doveton.
