Libraries highlight horrors of Holocaust

ALL Bradford's libraries are setting up special displays to encourage local people to remember and learn from the Holocaust and other genocides.

The displays in the district's 31 libraries coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day, an international day of remembrance held on January 27 every year.

It was on this date in 1945 that the largest Nazi killing camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.

The Holocaust was a defining episode of the 20th century and this year's theme, Untold Stories, looks in detail at the people behind the harrowing statistics.

The displays will feature images of victims and people whose lives have been changed beyond recognition because of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and the continuing atrocities today in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Bradford's Poet Laureate, Gerard Benson has penned a special poem to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day which will be displayed alongside poetry written by local school children.

A special selection of books and films about the Holocaust and genocide will be available and visitors will be able to visit the UK's Holocaust Memorial Day website and other electronic resources.
