Lifeguard gets into training for tough fitness challenge

Life will not be a beach for a lifeguard from Hornsea when he takes part in one of the world’s toughest challenges.

Ryan Hepworth, 24, is training hard ahead of The Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii in October. The event involves a 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles of cycling and a 26.2-mile marathon in high temperatures.

Mr Hepworth, from Beeford, secured his place on the international stage by finishing as the first Briton in his age group at the national final in Bolton. He completed the event in just over 10 hours despite having only first competed a year ago with a time of 11 hours 45 minutes.

He said: “The first time I entered, it was all about just completing it. This year, having taken it a bit more seriously and knowing more what I had to do, I was in disbelief seeing that I had made it through to the world championships. I didn’t know until I had crossed the finish line that I was the fastest British male athlete in my age group.”

He added: “I’m putting in about 20 hours a week, though obviously, the temperatures and conditions in Hawaii will be slightly different to this country. As well as the cycling, running and swimming training, I’m also going to be sitting in a sauna for a few hours in a bid to get used to the heat.”

Mr Hepworth completed a sports and leisure management degree at the University of Hull. He is raising money for his trip. For more details visit http://ryan-hepworth.blogspot.com or e-mail ryanhep [email protected]
