Lights scheme for historic buildings

THE facades of three historic buildings in a Yorkshire town are set to be fitted with floodlighting to highlight them against the night sky.

Councillors in Huddersfield are expected to back the £95,000 scheme for St George’s Square at a meeting today.

The lights will illuminate George Hotel, Lion Chambers and Britannia Buildings.

They are among the buildings visible to visitors arriving at the railway station.

Facade lighting for the station was completed last year.

A council report on the plans says: “The installation of the scheme presents a significant but not insurmountable challenge; because of listed building restrictions, high level working with significant pedestrian movement taking place below and removing then replacing bird netting which is affixed to the buildings.”

The scheme follows previous ones to both Dewsbury and Huddersfield town halls.

The council says that energy consumption costs are estimated at only £400 per annum on current rates.
