Lightship to join radio ham event

A historic vessel berthed in Hull will be amongst 250 lighthouses and lightships taking part in a global radio ham event this weekend.

Visitors boarding the Spurn Lightship in Hull Marina will be able to send their own messages round the world.

Members of the Kettering and District Amateur Radio Society chose to use the ship as a base for broadcasting as part of the event organised by the International Association of Lighthouse Keepers and amateur radio enthusiasts around the world.

The Lightship will have a unique call sign based on the one used during its active service on the Humber in the 1930s. Built in 1927 by the Goole Shipbuilding and Repairing Co Ltd for 17,000, the lightship served for 48 years as a beacon for mariners at her position four miles east of Spurn Point.

When she was decommissioned she was bought by Hull Council and restored.
