Literature festival tickets are selling fast

TICKETS are selling fast for next month's Beverley Literature festival.

Big names from the world of literature include Louis de Bernires, the author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, who is kicking off the festival at 7pm on Friday October 1. He will b e followed by a performance of Mary Shelley's classic horror story Frankenstein.

On Saturday, there is a chance to rethink assumptions about the Battle of the Somme with William Philpott, the author of a new book about one of history's most emotive battles.

Taking a fresh look at historic conflict is a theme that runs throughout the festival, which takes place at various locations in the town, from October 1 to October 10.

Jim Crace, winner of the Whitbread (now Costa) first novel award, makes his first appearance at the festival on Saturday night, talking about his latest novel All that Follows.

Sunday starts at midday with Don Paterson talking about Shakespeare's sonnets as well as reading from his own work. Then after lunch, there is a performance of readings from the novel Tristram Shandy set to live music by author Laurence Stern's contemporary Heinrich Abel.

To finish the day, brilliant comedy writer David Nobbs, who created the character Reginald Perrin, will be talking about his latest novel.

His new sitcom for Radio 4, The Maltby Collection, is on Wednesdays at 6.30pm.

Also appearing are Roy Hattersley on Lloyd George, Michle Roberts and Polly Toynbee.

Children are also in for some top entertainment at the Children's Literature Festival, which runs over the weekend of October 9 to 10.
