Living wage welcomed

CAMPAIGNERS in East Yorkshire have welcomed a Government announcement in support of the “living wage”.

The Department for Work and Pensions has become the first Ministry to commit to paying the London “living wage” to low-paid cleaners and catering staff.

The parliamentary spokesman for Beverley and Holderness Labour Party, George McManus, who is campaigning for a new minimum wage at East Riding Council of £7.45 an hour, claimed the move is “great news” that reflects growing public support.

He urged the authority to follow the national lead. The council said a national pay claim had been put in by trade unions but no final decision had been reached.
