Local produce scheme gets a boost

A push to urge rural North Yorkshire communities to grow their own produce and slash food miles across the county has been extended.

Two Richmondshire-based hubs – in Richmond and Catterick – have now been set up to trial a local organic food buying scheme that will deliver freshly-grown local produce around the district.

The pilot period will allow people to order vegetables from the hubs, or set up their alternative delivery hubs with at least 10 other people in their neighbourhoods or workplaces anywhere in the district.

The scheme has been launched by community group, TRY – Growing Food Together, which recently agreed a 12-month lease with Richmondshire District Council to develop 12 plots of land ranging from a small herb garden outside a pizza takeaway to a six-acre site in a derelict orchard.

The project intends to build on the success of trailblazing schemes such as the Incredible Edible Todmorden scheme, which set up plots in the West Yorkshire town for people to pick their own fruit and vegetables.
