Locomotives make their stamp on history

The golden age of steam is being remembered in a new set of special stamps celebrating the nation's railways which go on sale today. Peter Thorpe from the National Railway Museum in York helped launch the six stamps with a blow-up of the First Class LMS Coronation Class stamp and the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive in the background

The stamps feature period photographs of some of the country's classic steam locomotives. The stamps mark the 50th anniversary of the building of the last British steam locomotive, British Railways' Evening Star, which is pictured in 1962 on a first class stamp.
