LONDON CALLING: Jessica warms up nicely

STAR athlete Jessica Ennis has Olympic gold firmly in her sights after storming to victory to become European heptathlon champion.

The 24-year-old from Sheffield is firm favourite to win gold in London in 2012 after her stunning triumph at the European championships in Barcelona, setting a new personal best.

Her odds on becoming BBC Sports Personality of the Year have tumbled and the 5ft 5in champion is now being tipped to become the poster girl for the London games.

Mike Corden, chairman of the City of Sheffield Athletics Club, which she joined aged 11 and where she still trains, paid tribute to her mental toughness and dedication, adding: "She is an exceptional talent."
