Long-distance cyclists’ goal is charity boost and three points

fans of Huddersfield Town set off yesterday morning on a tough 260-mile cycle ride from the club’s West Yorkshire stadium to the south coast.

A group of 168 riders – including Town chairman Dean Hoyle and former player Andy Booth – are raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the club’s academy.

They are hoping to arrive in Brighton on Saturday in time to see Town take on the League One champions.

Last year, the Town chairman and 21 others rode from Huddersfield to Southend for the first game of the season.

Before setting off, Mr Hoyle said: “Despite promising we wouldn’t do it again after last year’s effort to Southend, we could not say no considering the amount of money we raised.

“The camaraderie shown amongst the riders throughout the last four months has been fantastic and although it is cold this morning I am sure everyone will have warmed up soon.

“It’s amazing to see how it has grown from the first Pedal for Pounds – last year we had to drag people to join in, but this year we had too many applicants.

“I am sure it will be a fantastic three-and-half days and hopefully capped off with a win at the Withdean.”
