Long-serving councillor takes charge

ONE of the East Riding's longest-serving councillors has been elected chairman of the authority.

Coun David Rudd, who was first elected as a member of East Yorkshire Borough Council and Market Weighton Town Council in 1985, has been a member of the unitary authority since its inception in 1996.

He said he was looking forward to his new role and raising money for his chosen charities, the Market Weighton scout and guide groups and the NSPCC.

He said: "I am really looking forward to my year in office as chairman of the council. It is a tremendous opportunity to serve in a new role and meet many interesting people while representing the

East Riding to the best of my

ability.

Coun Rudd, who was elected at the council's annual meeting yesterday, is the vice-chairman of Humberside Police Authority and a governor of Market Weighton School.

The Wolds Weighton ward councillor is an active member of the Wolds Conservative Group and also a sidesman at Market Weighton All Saints' Church.

Coun Rudd succeeds outgoing chairman Coun Christopher Matthews, while Pocklington Provincial ward councillor Kay West was elected vice-chairman.
