Long wait for prize finally over as schoolboy sees bandstand design

SCHOOLBOY Joe Manning had long forgotten the day he sketched a design for a piece of art for a local bandstand.

He was at primary school when he did the drawing and at secondary school when, 18 months on, he finally learned that it was being incorporated into the new bandstand.

Joe, now 12, was a pupil at Saltaire primary school in Bradford when designer Peter Vickers asked pupils to come up with an idea relating to both music and the environment surrounding a new bandstand in Roberts Park, which was due for a 4.5m Lottery-funded revamp.

Joe's design of a horn and flower-shaped musical notes impressed Mr Vickers but it took a while before the final work was complete.

Joe was then invited to attend the opening of the bandstand in honour of his winning design - though it took a little work for Mr Vickers to track him down. He phoned his old school and then get in touch with his new school, Beckfoot.

His dad Andy Manning said: "It was a great day and the whole family are very proud that Joe's art work has been incorporated into a fantastic design which adds so much to the park and Saltaire.

"Joe was surprised and pleased that his work was chosen and was pleased that Peter had taken the trouble to ring him."
