Look, no hands ....

Scientists have unveiled a car that can be steered with the driver's eyes.

Berlin Free University scientist David Latotzky showed off the helmet device at Berlin's disused Tempelhof Airport yesterday.

His colleague Raul Rojas said the technology tracks drivers' eye movements and, in turn, steers the car in whatever direction they are looking.

Called 'eyeDriver', the system lets the car travel at speeds of up to 30 mph.

'The next step will be to get it to drive 60 miles per hour,' said Mr Rojas. 'The biggest challenge is of course to drive in a city with pedestrians and lots of obstacles.'

However, it remains unclear when – or if – the technology will be developed commercially as questions about safety and practicability remain.

The researchers have addressed distractions – by producing another car equipped with GPS navigation, scores of cameras, lasers and scanners that enable it to drive by itself.
