Lord Harewood dies: Queen’s cousin a key figure in opera world

George Lascelles, the 7th Earl of Harewood, devoted much of his life to opera, having survived a spell in Colditz during the war, and was a founder of Opera North.

He also served on the board of the English National Opera and edited Kobbe’s, the standard operatic reference book.

Richard Mantle, general director of Opera North, said: “He was passionate that opera should be for everyone... He was a great promoter of talent.

“He was a man of enormous charm. He was a fantastic raconteur and was a convivial person to be with.”

Lord Harewood was also president of Leeds United from 1961. Club chairman Ken Bates said: “Although he was royalty, he always treated me as an equal and I feel like I have lost a true friend.”

A family spokesman said Lord Harewood passed away peacefully at home, adding that a thanksgiving service for his life will be held at a later date following a private funeral.

He added: “It was Lord Harewood’s wish that Harewood House and grounds should continue to remain open to the public on his death, and during the period of family mourning leading up to his funeral. Books of condolence will be opened for visitors to sign in both the House and All Saints’ Church.”
