Lord Mayor hailed for £50,000 fillip

MORE than £50,000 has been raised for charity during a Lord Mayor of Hull’s year in office.

Coun David Gemmel and his Charity Appeal Committee worked tirelessly to help raise a total of £54,714 which will be shared equally between two organisations, Parkinson’s UK and Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

Miranda Mays, the fundraising manager for Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “The staggering sum raised will pay for months of pioneering dementia research and vital equipment for our scientists, bringing us nearer to finding ways to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure dementia.”

She added: “We are enormously grateful to the Lord Mayor of Hull, firstly for choosing Alzheimer’s Research UK as one of his charities of the year and for the incredible amount he has raised during the past 12 months of dedicated, imaginative fundraising.

“The support of the Lord Mayor of Hull and his team has meant a great deal to us.”

Coun Gemmel, whose term in office ended in May, will hand over the cash to the charities during an official presentation today at 2pm in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour.
