A lot of steps in right health direction

A GROUP of nearly 100 overweight men from Barnsley have together walked more than 3,500 miles while taking part in a health competition organised by the NHS.

Bosses at NHS Barnsley challenged overweight men aged between 40 and 64 to increase the number of steps they take each day to improve their health.

Teams of up to six men then competed against each other as part of a 12-week virtual “coast to coast” challenge. The winners, a team from New Lodge working men’s club, recorded more than one million steps. Prizes, which included tickets to Barnsley FC, were awarded to those who reduced their body mass index and walked the most steps.

Walk co-ordinator Mark Green said: “All of the men did absolutely fantastically with some losing weight and others dramatically increasing their physical activity.”
