Lottery bid to bring waterway to life

POCKLINGTON Canal could get a spruce-up if an application for lottery funding is successful.

The East Riding and North Yorkshire Waterways Partnership is preparing a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a range of projects based on community engagement and the enhancement of the natural environment.

The project is one of several the partnership is working on among the 15 inland waterways in its area.

A feasibility study is being carried out on Market Weighton Canal and the River Foulness to find out how waterway recreational activities can be effectively balanced with the creation of new habitats for wildlife.

Partnership chairman Bob Watson said: “This is an exciting time for our partnership and we’re looking forward to what the future holds for our fantastic waterways. Our aim is to work together so that the waterways, which are under appreciated assets, can add significantly to the quality of life in the East Riding and North Yorkshire and contribute to environmental, economic and social regeneration.”
