Lucky youngster becomes town’s first-ever young mayor

MOST girls would jump at the chance to try on some priceless pieces of extravagant jewellery.

But lucky Cordie Freeman, 10, has had the chance to model some especially impressive “bling” after being chosen to become Doncaster’s first ever Junior Civic Mayor.

The Montagu Primary School pupil was officially inducted into her new role at a ceremony conducted by the council’s Civic Mayor, Coun Eva Hughes, at the Mansion House. At that ceremony, she tried on her mayoral chain and robes for the very first time.

Coun Hughes said that choosing a winner out of the 251 entries, from 26 schools in Doncaster, was a difficult task.

She said: “We laughed at many of the comments and were very impressed by the variety of ideas that they all came up with.

“Their maturity and commitment to their community impressed all the judges. Entrants were not afraid of promoting themselves.

“I was really excited when it was suggested that we have a young Civic Mayor. I’m also looking forward to learning a lot from the Junior Civic Mayor.”

Each of the 24 finalists were presented with a certificate during the ceremony.

Cordie, who was described as a “credit” to her family, said: “I’m really pleased to have won, I wasn’t expecting to.”
