M1 reopens after bridge jump man halts traffic

A MAN who was threatening to jump from a bridge on to the M1 in Yorkshire - causing long delays for commuters this morning - has been detained by police.

The motorway has now re-opened after police closed it for sveral hours in both directions between junctions 36 and 38.

Officers were called to the Higham bridge at Barnsley, just after 8am today. Diversions were put in place but motorists were delayed by up to an hour.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “The man has been detained safe and well by police officers.”
