M62 chaos as McDonald’s lorry catches fire

DRIVERS faced rush-hour chaos this morning after a lorry fire partly closed the M62 in West Yorkshire.

The problems are compounded by an accident involving four cars and another broken down car. One lane is blocked and traffic is queuing on the westbound carriageway before junction 26, the M606 at Chain Bar.

There is also stop-start traffic on the M62 eastbound between junctions 25 and 26, the A644 at Brighouse and the M606. It is taking up to an hour to pass through the section of road.

A McDonald’s lorry caught fire at around 4.30am. Firefighters from Brighouse, Cleckheaton and Elland tackled the blaze.

A brigade spokesman said the driver of the lorry had spotted smoke from a rear wheel as he was travelling through roadworks but had been unable to pull over because there was no hard shoulder.

Firefighters were at the scene for three hours.
