M62 closure as upgrade gets into gear

MOTORISTS face the first of a series of weekend overnight closures on the M62 in West Yorkshire as the region’s first managed motorway hits its stride.

This will take place on Saturday, March 17.

The £150m managed motorway scheme will cut congestion, make journey times more reliable and improve safety through the use of variable mandatory speed limits and by opening the hard shoulder as an extra running lane.

The first phase of work to install overhead gantries will require an overnight closure from 8pm on March 17 until 8am on March 18 between Junction 27 (Gildersome) and 28 (Tingley).

The M62 will be closed in both directions.

A clearly signed diversion route will operate via the A650.

Further weekend overnight closures will be required on various sections of the M62 between junctions 25 (Brighouse) to 30 (Rothwell) until November, but it will not be every weekend.

David Pilsworth, Highways Agency project manager, said: “Using overnight closures gives us full access to the motorway and means we can install the gantries, signs and signals as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
