Macaws make their presence felt

They are brother and sister, seven months old and like any youngsters they are hungry for attention.

Macaw parrots Bonnie and Alfie are the latest additions to the family at the Tropical Butterfly House in North Anston, near Sheffield, and will soon be the stars of the show. They are set to begin training to take part in the centre's free-flying displays, but are currently entertaining the public by showing off their repertoire of squawks and whistles.

Animal presenter at the attraction Heather Scott, pictured, said: "Macaws are highly intelligent and Bonnie and Alfie are already showing promise for the flying displays. As far as we know, they will be the only free-flying macaws in Yorkshire".

Heather and education officer Rebecca Iwahashi will begin training the macaws in June and expect the colourful pair of green wing macaws to feature in free-flying displays later in the summer.

The Tropical Butterfly House is open between 10.30am and 4.30pm on weekdays and 10.30am and 5.30pm at weekends and school holidays.
