Major bus route set to be improved

MORE than £1m is set to be spent on improving one of Rotherham’s major bus routes.

At a meeting next Monday, February 20, Rotherham Council is set to approve road improvements worth £1.2m on the A630 Doncaster Road in Dalton.

Funding for the scheme will come from the Government’s Department for Transport, Rotherham Council and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

A total of £625,000 would be spend on putting in traffic lights on the junction of Doncaster Road and Oldgate Lane, while a further £610,000 would be spent on a bus lane on Whinney Hill.

The aim of the scheme is to improve public transport links on the X78 bus service, one of the most popular bus routes in South Yorkshire, which connects Sheffield to Doncaster via Rotherham.

In papers set to go before next Monday’s meeting, Rotherham Council’s senior technician Richard Baker says that the proposals would “provide accessibility improvements and improve congestion” as well we bringing about “more relibale journey times.”

If approved, work on the scheme could begin in the 2012/13 financial year.
