In order to successfully tackle the flames, crews were having to remove one car at a time from the blazing scrap pile and ensure it was fully extinguished before moving onto the next vehicle.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters were called to the incident at 4am on Thursday morning. Around 25 firefighters with five fire engines from Edlington, Maltby, Dearne and Rotherham stations are at the scene.

“There are no reports of any casualties. Local residents were asked to keep doors and windows closed.

“A full fire investigation will be carried out by specialist officers once the fire has been fully extinguished.”
