Major homes project inside city walls is backed by members of council

the second stage of a prestigious development within York’s historic walls has been backed by councillors.

Work is now due to start in the summer after detailed planning consent for 195 homes was given by members of York Council.

York Council gave its approval to the plans several years ago to transform the semi-derelict Hungate site with 720 new homes as well as a riverside piazza, walkways and cycle paths. The regeneration scheme was heralded as one of the most significant building programmes in Europe by the architects but later stalled as a result of the downturn.

The development, owned by Hungate Regeneration Ltd, a venture between Lend Lease and Evans Property Group, will include 195 homes, ranging from one to three-bedroom apartments.

The homes will be built in one of the most historic parts of York with the site being the subject of a major archaeological dig conducted by York Archaeological Trust, which revealed artefacts dating back to the Roman period.

The riverside scheme is located a short walk from the heart of York.

Richard Cook, Lend Lease’s Head of Residential, said he expected strong interest in the project: “We have been working closely with City of York Council during the planning process to incorporate the views of the public as well as York Archaeological Trust who have been leading the archaeological preservation of the site.”
