Major IBS conference in Sheffield

A Sheffield-based charity will host a national IBS conference - to give sufferers the chance to share their experiences.

The IBS Network, the UK’s national charity for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, will hold the free one-day event at The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield this April, to give those living with IBS the chance to feed their experiences directly back to medical experts in the field.

A range of speakers will appear at the conference, which coincides with the charity’s 25th anniversary, and a range of topics will be discussed - including what it is like to live with IBS, what can be done about it, why the diagnosis matters, what patients can eat and what patients want from current research. It will also examine how patients can work more effectively with their health professionals.

IBS is the name given to a long-term gastrointestinal condition, characterised by a combination of symptoms that affect the colon or large intestine, including abdominal pain, bloating and spasms.

Dr Nick Read, the Chair of The IBS Network, who is also a gastroenterologist and psychotherapist, said: “IBS is an individual condition that many patients can learn to manage themselves as long as they understand the nature of the illness, how it is related to a person’s life style and circumstances, and what treatments and changes can work.

“The conference is a fantastic opportunity for patients with IBS to express what matters to them to the medical experts and hear their responses.”

The conference will also include an exhibition and a cookery demonstration from a nutritionist.
