Major plans for upgrading town’s social care facilities to go on display

Multi-million pound plans for a major investment in adult social care facilities in Selby are to be showcased to the public.

North Yorkshire County Council is planning to spend almost £4m on refurbishing Selby Day Centre in a bid to ensure residents have access to modern, purpose-built facilities.

Plans for the centre, which is regularly used by older people and those with complex needs, include a four-bed residential respite unit with its own private garden, which will replace a previous facility that was forced to close after it failed to meet the standards required by the Care Quality Commission.

There will also be new day care facilities for people with learning disabilities including quiet, sensory and activity rooms and a fully-equipped changing area which will be the first room of its type in Selby and will be available for use by disabled people from across the local community.

Helen Taylor, North Yorkshire’s corporate director of health and adult services, said: “This is a major investment, which demonstrates our total commitment to supporting vulnerable people in our society.”

Work, which is expected to cost £3.8m, will begin later this year and will be completed by autumn 2013. During the construction period, services will be made available in temporary accommodation.

It is planned that the current day care facilities for older people will be moved to Carentan House, an elderly people’s home on the same site, once building improvements have been completed.

The plans will be on display at Selby Day Centre next Wednesday between 1pm and 7pm.
