Major road works scheme to ease congestion at key junction

A MAJOR scheme is due to get underway to ease congestion and open up business development opportunities in a Yorkshire city.

Motorists are warned to expect delays as work starts on Monday June 23 on road improvements for the junction of Canal Road and Stanley Road in Bradford.

It will involve creating a short length of dual carriageway on Canal Road and introducing traffic signals at the Stanley Road junction to improve traffic flow on Canal Road and discourage rat running through Bolton Woods.

The £3.8M project, funded by Bradford Council and the Department for Transport through the Local Pinch Point fund, is expected to take a year to complete.

This scheme is planned to be the first phase of a wider improvement of the Canal Road corridor that is likely to be funded from the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund which is currently being developed.

Some traffic disruption is expected and drivers are requested to take extra care when driving through the road works.

Councillor Val Slater, Bradford Council executive member for housing, planning and transport, said: “We apologise to any travellers facing delays and congestion because of the work but we are sure that the end result will make up for any temporary inconvenience.”

“The scheme is designed to bring transport benefits to this strategic corridor while also opening up new development opportunities in Canal Road and Airedale, as well as assisting the delivery of the New Bolton Woods regeneration scheme in particular.”
