Mall visitors in a flap

SHOPPERS at Doncaster's Frenchgate centre on Saturday were surprised to find five visitors from the Antarctic.

The Humboldt penguins stayed in an enclosure and paddling pool while their handler answered questions and gave talks each hour. A spokesman for the shopping centre said: "The event was yet another move by the Frenchgate Centre to create a family-friendly atmosphere. It was a unique opportunity for the people of Doncaster to see these animals close up."

Children can now also meet Father Christmas in his grotto at Frenchgate. Santa will be there to meet visitors between 11am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays in the run-up to Christmas.

Other festive events include live music on Thursday evenings until December 23.
