Man, 19, arrested over New Year’s Eve murder

Detectives investigating a fatal stabbing at a New Year party arrested a teenager yesterday on suspicion of murder.

Father-of-two Joshua Green, 27, was stabbed while on the dance floor at the Stars and Mayfair Function Suites, in Sheffield, in the early hours of New Year’s Day. He died at the scene.

A murder investigation was launched following the death and detectives have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of murder, a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said.

Officers were called to the venue on Queen’s Road, about a mile from the city centre, at 2.47am on New Year’s Day.

Mr Green, from Manor Park, Sheffield, was out with his brother and friends to celebrate the New Year, police said.

Det Supt Andy Thompson, who is leading the investigation, said: “We’ve had a good response from members of the public who were present that night, but we’ve still not been contacted by all 400 partygoers.

“I’d appeal for people in the club on New Year’s Eve to contact the police in confidence so that we can eliminate them from our inquiry.”
