Man, 22, killed after car hits lamppost

TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a 22-year-old man died in a crash involving a car and a moped.

The victim was apparently driving a blue Peugeot 306 when it left the road after overtaking a Piaggio NRG scooter on Industry Road, Carlton, Barnsley.

Police said the crash happened at about 10.25pm on Friday night close to the junction of St Anne’s Drive at the Carlton Industrial Estate.

A spokesman for the South Yorkshire force said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old man died when his car was involved in a collision.

“It has been reported that as the Peugeot approached a left hand bend the vehicle lost control and left the carriageway, colliding with a concrete lamppost, causing extensive damage to the car.

“The driver suffered fatal injuries in the collision.”

Police said there were four passengers in the car who were all injured, including a 17-year-old girl who was described as being in a “life-threatening” condition in Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.

A boy aged 16 was also taken to the Northern General with a broken leg and pelvis after the crash, while a 19-year-old man and a woman, 25, were taken to Barnsley Hospital with minor back and whiplash injuries.

Flowers had been placed at the scene yesterday. One card read: “Dear Benji, you will never be forgotten and always be loved and missed.”

Police did not identify the dead man yesterday but said he was from the Lundwood area of Barnsley. Officers said it was not clear who was riding the scooter at the time of the crash, but confirmed that two men, aged 19 and 21, had been arrested and questioned.

Anyone with information which could assist police should call them on 101.
