Detective Constable Craig Martin, from Strathclyde Police, said: "The victim had just arrived in Glasgow from Harrogate for his daughter's wedding this Saturday.

"He was out having a few beers with his future son-in-law, and what should have been a celebratory occasion has resulted in him being put in hospital with a severe head injury.

"He also has extensive bruising to his face, and is supposed to be giving his daughter away in six days time.

"The whole family is naturally extremely upset.

"From the information we have gathered so far, some 'banter' was exchanged between the two groups which has escalated into the violence that took place.

"The victim was simply caught up in this attack," he added.
