Man, 89, robbed in violent attack in Halifax

The 89-year-old man was attacked and robbed outside his house on Rochdale Road, Greetland, after being dropped off by a taxi at home having been to work. As he was walking up the drive of his house carrying a small holdall he was approached from behind, pushed to the floor and then hit in the face by a man.

Detectives said the victim is now recovering in hospital having suffered severe facial injuries in the incident which happened between 6.40pm and 6.50pm yesterday.

Det Sgt Ross Wadsworth of Calderdale CID, said: “This was a particularly appalling attack against a hard working, elderly gentleman.

“The level of violence used against the victim was particularly vicious and completely unnecessary against a man who needs a zimmer frame to help him get around.”

The male robber, who is described as being tall, then made off with the bag which contained a small amount of cash.

Det Sgt Wadsworth added: “I am appealing directly to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anyone or any vehicles being driven suspiciously in the area between 6pm and 7pm on Friday to come forward. The incident happened close to the Nisa store.

“It might be that the attacker had blood stained clothing on when he returned home so if you suspect someone you know please come forward and help us catch the person responsible.”
