Man assaulted after joking to kissing couple

A MAN launched a violent assault on a passer-by, fracturing his jaw in two places – and then tried to apologise.

The incident happened between the H Samuel jewellery store and Thornton’s, on Whitefriargate, in Hull, in the early hours of Sunday.

His 22-year-old victim, who is from North Ferriby, walked past a man and woman kissing in a shop doorway and made a comment in jest about their behaviour.

The man went up to the 22-year-old and hit him repeatedly in the face, breaking his jaw.

The victim was knocked to the ground where his assailant tried to continue attacking him but was fought off by two friends.

The injured man and his friends then walked away – with the attacker following and trying to apologise, before turning back towards the scene of the assault. The victim was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where he was treated for his injuries.

The suspect is described as early to mid 20s, 6ft, athletic build with short, fair hair.

He had a tattoo on one of his upper arms possibly a football team badge and was wearing a light-coloured T-shirt.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
