Man badly burned as gas blast rocks house in early hours

A MAN suffered severe burns in a gas explosion at his South Yorkshire home early yesterday morning.

An investigation has been launched by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue into the circumstances of the blast, which rocked a house in the Hackenthorpe area of Sheffield at around 5.45am.

One man was badly hurt and was rushed to the city’s Northern General Hospital for treatment, while neighbours were moved out for fear that the fire might spread to surrounding properties.

Fire crews tackled the blaze for more than three hours.

A spokesman for the fire service said yesterday: “Firefighters have tackled a fire at a Sheffield home following a gas explosion.

“Crews from Mansfield Road and Central fire stations were called to the incident on Jermyn Avenue in Hackenthorpe at 5.44am.

“They arrived on the scene in just four minutes and quickly administered first aid to a male occupant who had suffered severe burns to his body. The casualty was taken to the Northern General Hospital by ambulance.

“Crews then used three water jets to tackle the fire, leaving the scene after 9am.
