Man charged over cocaine on lorry

A MAN has appeared in court after cocaine estimated to be worth at least £4.5m was found on a lorry driving off a ferry in Hull.

A total of 84 kgs of the class A drug was discovered when the vehicle was stopped as it left a ferry from Rotterdam on Friday.

A man aged 51 from East Yorkshire has been charged with importing class A drugs.

He was remanded in custody to appear via video link next Monday.

His arrest followed a joint investigation by the Serious Organised Crime Agency, the UK Border Agency and Humberside Police, and the seizure has been described as “significant”.

Tests are being carried out on the drug, but cocaine seized at UK borders is often of 70 per cent purity, allowing dealers to maximise profits by repeatedly “cutting” the drug with other substances for street deals of 10 to 20 per cent purity at £50 a gramme.
