Man ‘in combat gear’ arrested after siege

A MAN has been arrested following an armed siege at a house in Hull.

Police marksmen surrounded a terraced property in Edward Collins Square, off Ripon Way, just before 7.30am yesterday following concerns for a man’s safety.

Residents were ordered to stay indoors and a cordon was placed across the entry to Ripon Way, which was ringed by police vehicles and paramedics’ cars.

The siege ended peacefully just before noon and neighbours described seeing a man wearing combat clothing being taken away in an ambulance. Police have not confirmed whether any weapons were found although the house was searched.

Jonathan Crowther, 28, a DJ, living two doors away, spoke of his shock at being confronted by armed officers when he attempted to leave for work.

He said: “I woke up and went out the front door at 9.30am to go to work and all the police were lined up with snipers aiming at the door next to my house. At first it looked like they were all pointing at me and they told me, ‘Get back in! Get back in!’

“I’m a little bit shaken up – you don’t expect that every day.”

He added: “The guy they arrested was in full army uniform, almost. He was wearing combat gear but he ended up in the ambulance, not in police custody, so I’m not sure exactly what’s gone on.”

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said: “Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with firearms offences following an incident which happened on Ripon Way in Hull at 7.26am this morning in relation to concerns for the man’s safety. Officers would like to reassure local residents that the incident has been resolved peacefully.”
