The numbers marked out – 666 – are described as ‘the number of the beast’ in the New Testament and are widely recognised as symbols for the devil.

During yesterday’s court hearing, the charge was changed to causing racially or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress by writing or words.

Adam, 56, of Elm Avenue, Burstwick, pleaded guilty to the new charge.

He was ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation and a £250 fine, plus a £30 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
