Man dies after being found unconscious in icy Leeds street

Efforts to save him at Leeds Infirmary failed after he was rushed there by ambulance.

The man, believed to be in his 40s and single, was found with a minor head injury on frost-covered flagstones in Barley Hill Road, Garforth, Leeds, late on Sunday night.

Police are investigating whether he fell on the icy pavement, injured his head and was overcome by the cold. Temperatures had fallen to at least -10 C in parts of Leeds.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, but inquiries were continuing last night.

The man, who lived with his parents near the spot where he fell, was found by people making their own way home.

It is understood that the dead man, who is not being named until family have been informed, is unemployed. It is believed he may have visited a bar or club earlier in the evening and was walking home.

Police sealed off the area and put up a protective forensic tent over the point where the man was found. A detailed forensic examination of the scene was carried out by scientists in white suits along with scenes of crime officers.
