Shortly afterwards he went out to the balcony to escape the heat in the room and, according to police, unexpectedly slipped.

A night watchman heard the impact as he landed. His friend rushed down and went into shock.

Medics spent half an hour attending to Mr Marcuccio before transferring him to Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Eivissa but the Mr Marcuccio could not be saved by the emergency team and died at about 6.30am.

A relative of Mr Marcuccio’s, who did not wish to be named, speaking from the family-run restaurant in Bradford, said: “We don’t really know what happened. It’s a tragedy. He could easily have slipped.”

Hotel director Juna Bufi said it was unlikely to be a case of “balconing”, as was initially suspected in Spanish media reports, as there was no pool beneath the men’s room. There were no signs of any disturbance in the room.

An Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Ibiza.”

Consular assistance has been given to the man’s friends and family.

Mr Marcuccio’s family had recently moved to Baildon where he lived with his sister. His distraught family have travelled to Ibiza.

Mr Marcuccio was due to have been the best man at the wedding of his older brother Luca in Birkenshaw in September.
