Man in dock on charge of faking his own death

A man appeared in court yesterday accused of faking his own death.

Anthony McErlean is charged with fraud, namely that between December 5, 2009 and May 31, last year, he made a false claim to an insurance company to claim death benefit of £520,000 by faking his own death in Honduras.

The 66-year-old, of Petham, Canterbury, Kent, appeared at Canterbury Magistrates’ Court for a brief hearing yesterday where three further charges were read out against him, two of theft and one of fraud by false representation.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the same court on May 5 but was told the case would eventually be sent to the Crown court.
