Man facing double murder charge makes obscene gesture to magistrates

James Allen, of Lothian Road, Middlesbrough, smiled during proceedings yesterday at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, where he faced two counts of murder, and charges of rape, grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment and witness intimidation. Colin Dunford, 81, from Leven Street, Middlesbrough, and Julie Davison, 50, from Whitby, North Yorkshire, were found dead in their homes last week having suffered head injuries.

During the brief hearing, 36-year-old Allen smiled as an error was made during the proceedings and said “apology accepted” when the mistake was acknowledged.

He showed his middle finger to the magistrates as he was led away by two security guards. Allen was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned until today, when he will appear before Teesside Crown Court.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police are appealing for help to trace a laptop that went missing from Ms Davison’s home. Officers are asking anyone in the Leeds area to contact them if they have been offered a silver and black Toshiba laptop (C660/C660D model) for sale since Apri 26.
