Man held over death of Bradford policeman on holiday isle

Det Con Matthew Dunn, 31, was hit by a car in the resort of Playa Blanca on May 28. Another man was seriously injured in the incident.

A 36-year-old Spaniard was arrested on a series of charges and has been remanded by a court.

Det Con Dunn, a West Yorkshire Police officer since January 2004, lived in Bradford with his girlfriend, who is also serving with West Yorkshire Police.

The West Yorkshire Coroner has opened an inquest into Det Con Dunn's death.

Proceedings were adjourned to await a file from police in Lanzarote, who are investigating the tragedy.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said that consular officials were giving assistance to Det Con Dunn's family.

A spokesman confirmed that the officer had died from injuries received in a hit-and-run incident, but said officials had no further information about the investigation by authorities on the island.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said it was understood that a 36-year-old man had been charged with murder, attempted murder, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to administer first aid and drink-driving.

A court hearing was held and he was remanded in custody. It is understood that the man was living in Lanzarote but was originally from the Spanish mainland.

Det Con Dunn served with Calderdale CID and was a member of the Great Britain Rugby League police team.

His Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Alan Ford, said: 'Matt was a highly respected and well-known and loved officer.'
